Are you looking for ways to inspire your students and help them overcome challenges?
In this episode of [The Jeff Bradbury Show](https://teachercast.net/captivate-podcast/jbs-ep51-nina-sossamon-pogue/),
I had the opportunity to speak with [Nina Sossamon-Pogue](https://www.ninasossamonpogue.com/),
a resilience expert and author, on the topic of being present and appreciating the
blank pages ahead. During the conversation, we explored how the concept of resilience
can be applied in the classroom to positively impact student achievement.

## The Power of Resilience

Resilience is the ability to learn, grow, and adapt in a positive way to whatever
happens in your life. As educators, we have the opportunity to teach our students
this invaluable skill. Nina shares her personal journey of resilience, including
her experiences as a former member of the USA Gymnastics team, a news anchor, and
a tech company executive. She emphasizes the importance of resilience in overcoming
challenges and offers practical advice for individuals facing tough times.

## Embracing Change and Falling Forward

Change is inevitable, and learning how to embrace it is key to personal growth and
success. During the conversation, Nina discussed the significance of embracing change
and being open to new opportunities, even if they require stepping outside your
comfort zone. She introduced the concept of “falling forward,” which means using
challenging moments as opportunities for reinvention and personal growth. By encouraging
our students to embrace change and view setbacks as opportunities for growth, we
can empower them to become resilient individuals.

## Being Present in the Classroom

In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to become caught up in distractions and
lose sight of the present moment. Nina emphasizes the importance of being present
and fully engaged in the classroom. By teaching our students mindfulness techniques
and encouraging them to appreciate the blank pages ahead, we can help them develop
a sense of focus and purpose. Being present allows students to fully absorb information,
engage in meaningful discussions, and form deeper connections with their peers.

## Applying Resilience in Student Achievement

Resilience isn’t just about overcoming personal challenges; it can also have a profound
impact on student achievement. By fostering a resilient mindset in our students,
we equip them with the tools to navigate academic hurdles and persevere in the face
of obstacles. As educators, we can create a supportive environment where students
feel empowered to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them. By teaching them
to view failures as opportunities for growth, we cultivate a growth mindset that
fuels their motivation and desire to succeed.
