Dean Tolson is a former NBA player who has overcome incredible odds to become a successful entrepreneur and author. His new book, Power Forward, tells the story of his journey from being illiterate to earning a master’s degree with magna cum laude honors.
I recently sat down with Dean to discuss his story and his journey both on and off the basketball court as he dedicates his life to inspiring others around him to achieve greatness.
Achieving Academic Success off the Court
Tolson’s story is one of perseverance and determination. Despite being a talented athlete, he struggled with reading and writing throughout his childhood and into his early adulthood. It wasn’t until he was in his thirties that he finally learned to read, thanks to the help of a dedicated tutor.
But Tolson didn’t stop there. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree, both with honors. Along the way, he discovered a passion for entrepreneurship and started his own business.
Learning How to Power Forward
In Power Forward, Tolson shares the lessons he learned on his journey and offers advice to others who may be facing similar challenges. He talks about the importance of education and the need for more support for student athletes. He also discusses the role that parents can play in encouraging their children to stay in school and pursue their dreams.
Tolson’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to turn your life around. With hard work and determination, anyone can overcome the odds and achieve their goals.
Power Forward is published by Rowman & Littlefield and has been featured in Sports Illustrated. Tolson has been doing TV, radio, and podcast interviews to raise awareness about the challenges that students are facing and to inspire others to never give up on their dreams.
In his book, Tolson talks about the shocking, controversial actions that led to his recruitment and drafting, and how more changes need to be made for student athletes to become more empowered. He also discusses how busy, distracted parents can encourage their kids to stay in school and graduate from high school and college.
Tolson’s story is truly inspiring and his book is meant to help empower both adults and kids. If you’re looking for a motivational read, be sure to check out Power Forward by Dean Tolson.
